The new Cats

Geelong has finalised its primary list for the 2022 AFL season with five selections in the National Draft.

krockfootball.com.au spoke with Cats’ recruiting list manager Stephen Wells about what the club likes about the new quintet.

PICK NO.24 – TOBY CONWAY (Geelong Falcons/St Mary’s/Geelong College)

HEIGHT: 205cm
WEIGHT: 97kgs
POSITION: Ruck

WELLS SAYS: “Toby’s ruck craft is outstanding. His skills in that area are terrific. He’s got a good footy brain; he’s very competitive – he’s willing to follow up. And when he’s got the ball in his hands, he makes good decisions as well. He’s still got a long way to go as a developing ruckman, but he’s got the tools of the trade.”

PICK NO.25 – MITCH KNEVITT (Geelong Falcons/Grovedale)

HEIGHT: 193cm
WEIGHT: 81kg
POSITION: Midfielder

WELLS SAYS: “Mitch is a running player. He’s a good size, and he’s played a lot of good footy this year with his elite hands inside the contest. We also think he’s going to be versatile enough to play as a marking player at either end of the ground. He’s got plenty of talent, but also plenty of development.”

PICK NO.32 – JAMES WILLIS (North Adelaide/Ingle Farm/The Heights School)

HEIGHT: 183cm
WEIGHT: 78kg
POSITION: Midfielder

WELLS SAYS: “We’ve seen James play for a couple of years, and while he didn’t play all the games this year, he played enough games where he dominated in the SANFL under-18 competition. He’s a midfielder who went forward and kicked goals. He’s dynamic in and around the contest – he gets his legs going. And he makes good decisions with the footy.”

PICK NO.48 – FLYNN KROEGER (Eastern Ranges)

HEIGHT: 183cm
WEIGHT: 85kgs
POSITION: Midfielder

WELLS SAYS: “Flynn hasn’t had much exposure this year with the Eastern Ranges, but he’s a very strong midfielder-cum-half-back. He’s an elite kick and a very contested player. Because of the lack of games, he’s got plenty of development left in him. He complements the group of midfielders we’ve already got at the club.”

PICK NO.64 – COOPER WHYTE (Geelong Falcons/Grovedale/Grovedale College)

HEIGHT: 181cm
WEIGHT: 73kg
POSITION: Midfielder

WELLS SAYS: “Cooper is a very tough player, who can play inside or outside. He’s a left-footer and a very good mark for his size as well. Cooper gets plenty of the footy when he plays. We think he’s part of a good mix of players we were able to get that complement what we’ve got on our list.”

ROOKIE PICK NO.15 – OLLIE DEMPSEY (Carey Grammar/Old Carey Grammarians)

HEIGHT: 185cm
POSITION: Midfielder

WELLS SAYS: “Ollie has come back to footy this year from basketball. He played a bit of school footy at the start of the year, realised he was pretty good at it, and so did we. We continued to follow him, and his form at Carey Grammar was outstanding during the school footy games he played this year as a running, marking, 185cm forward. Over the last couple of years, a lot of these players haven’t had too much exposure, so it’s almost like a traditional rookie pick, where we’re giving a young fella go who, hopefully, will develop for us.”
