SOPHIE van de Heuvel has become the first Geelong player to depart GMHBA Stadium for an AFLW expansion club.

The Cats’ second pick in the 2018 AFLW Draft from NAB League club GWV Rebels, the 21-year-old pulled on the Hoops 31 times and was part of the inaugural team that defeated Collingwood to open the 2019 season.

“Sophie has been an integral member of our playing squad since we entered the AFLW, and we thank her for all she has given the club,” Geelong’s AFLW boss Brett Johnson said.

“In addition to her on-field ability, we know Sophie’s new team will benefit from her warmth and kindness that the Cats have enjoyed over the past four years.”

Which club van de Heuvel is joining hasn’t been confirmed.

She is the second confirmed list change for Geelong following the retirement of Danni Higgins.

More changes are expected with the expansion signing period for new clubs Hawthorn, Essendon, Port Adelaide and Sydney commencing on Tuesday.
