At Selection – Preliminary Final

GEELONG has turned to veteran swingman Lachie Henderson in favour of Gary Rohan to replace suspended spearhead Tom Hawkins for Friday night’s AFL preliminary final against Richmond at the MCG.

Henderson, who has played just 12 games since the start of 2018, including five this year, is the only inclusion to the team that defeated West Coast by 20 points in last week’s semi-final.

Rohan, who has kicked 25 goals, but only five since Round 9, missed the victory over the Eagles due to injury.

Teammate Mark Blicavs has backed Henderson to have no issues adapting if he is thrown forward, having spent the majority of his AFL matches in defence in 2019, comparing it to his own move onto a wing last week.

“I think it’s very similar to what I would do on the wing,” Blicavs said.

“He played a lot forward at Carlton, so I think he’s across that… defence, too.

“He’s a very smart footballer, so if he was to come in, I think he’d be fine with that role.”

Blicavs says he expects Richmond, which will go into the match unchanged, to chase a fast start.

The Tigers have won the first quarter seven times as part of a 10-match winning streak that’s helped the 2017 premiers to the second last weekend of the season for the third-straight year.

“They get out after it, and this year against us, they started really well in that first quarter,” he said.

“The previous defeats we’ve had against them last year, the same as well.

“They’ll be up for it; they’ll be fresh and ready to go, and it’s how we adjust to that and adapt to their pressure, and try and bring our own.

“I’m looking forward to the first bounce and the first contest to see what comes of that.
