More of the same for Stewart

GEELONG defender Tom Stewart is more concerned about replicating his 2018 form rather than trying to take his game to another level.

Named in the All-Australian team in just his second season in the AFL, the 25-year-old is also conscious of setting an example for his teammates to follow.

“I’ve just got to keep doing the same thing; playing the right way and helping my teammates out. That’s how I got to that position (All-Australian) in the first place,” Stewart said.

“If I can go to another level, that would be great.

“But I’ve got drag the blokes around me along for the ride, that’s my aim. And just to keep improving myself and improving my teammates.”

Whether Stewart, who was unveiled as an assistant coach of Geelong AFL Women’s on Monday, is a member of the Cats’ leadership group is 2019 is yet to be seen.

However, he does see himself as having something to offer the club.

“I’m looking forward to progressing that leadership role,” he said.

“Coming from South Barwon, where I was a leader there, and now stepping into the AFL program, I believe I have some sort of leadership qualities.

“I’m looking forward to getting that exposure, and with the girls as well, I hope to bring along some traits that I’ve learnt, and how to be better and better my teammates.”

Stewart, who was given an extra fortnight’s leave, will return to training officially next week uninhibited by ankle issues he battled during the year.

Despite the concerns, he was able to avoid off-season surgery.

“To have that week off against Richmond in Round 21 was all I needed,” Stewart said.

“It was a partial syndesmosis tear, but I was able to get through, and the medical staff were fantastic for me.

“They gave me the chance to play every week. To miss one with that sort of injury was a testament to them and the way they go about things.

“I’ve had a good rest and I’m raring to go.”
