Hendo prepared for squeeze

LACHIE Henderson concedes a tap on the shoulder could be coming his way if Geelong looks to adjust its defensive unit during the finals series.

The 30-year-old has strung together nine consecutive matches for the Cats since being recalled for the Round 8 win over Fremantle.

It’s his best run of games since playing 12 straight to end the 2017 season.

However, Henderson, who was re-drafted as a rookie late last year after being delisted, knows nothing is a given.

“It’s going to be a political answer from me here,” he said. “My spot was taken for a long period in the first half of the year, and I made my way back in.

“The boys have played pretty well, and I’ve played pretty well, and I’ve kept my spot. It’s really going to depend week-on-week. I don’t hold anything against whatever happens.

“I’ve still got to perform and make sure that I do the right thing and play my role for the team.

“If I do that, then, whatever happens, is beyond my control. If I don’t do that, it’s pretty obvious what I think will happen.”

After being told by Geelong his services weren’t going to be required in 2020, Henderson had started making loose plans for this year.

However, they were unlikely to involve playing football at a local level.

Instead, Henderson was keen to explore the world.

“I reckon I would be stuck somewhere in Africa,” he said.

“I reckon I would have ducked out (of Australia) before it (COVID-19) all hit at the start of this year, (and) I’d be stuck somewhere overseas.”

Henderson may get to travel next year, with the Birregurra product leaving discussions about his future at Geelong until the end of the season.

“I’ve definitely thought about next year,” he said,

“But, as honest as I can be, I’m more than happy to leave it how it ended last year, in terms of I’ll wait until the end of the year, we’ll have our chats at the end of the year.

“There is no rush on someone like me. There doesn’t need to be any rush on someone like me.

“I’m where I need to be at the moment, and when the time comes at the end of the year, I’m sure they’ll come knocking and say they’re going to delist me or they’re going to recontract me.”
