Hawk among Cats’ MVP hopes

LIKELY Coleman medallist Tom Hawkins is among the three Geelong nominations for the Leigh Matthews Trophy as the AFL Players’ Association’s Most Valuable Player.

Hawkins, who has kicked 40 goals and has nine-goal lead with one round remaining, is in the mix along with midfielder Cam Guthrie and wingman Sam Menegola

All three have played all 16 home-and-away games.

Guthrie is averaging a team-high 22.19 disposals per game and is second at the Cats for clearances and tackles.

Menegola is third in average disposals at 21.69, is second for inside 50s and third for clearances.

Defender Jack Henry is the Cats’ nomination for the Robert Rose Most Courageous award and Bradley Close is a candidate for the best first-year player gong.

Those two awards will be announced along with the #22under22 team on September 22.

The Leigh Matthews Trophy winner will be revealed two days later on September 24.
