CAM Guthrie says it now in the hands of Geelong’s coaching staff as to whether he is in contention for selection for the Easter Monday clash with Hawthorn.

The versatile Guthrie returned from three weeks on the sidelines with a calf issue in the Cats’ one-point VFL loss to Northern Blues at GMHBA Stadium.

“I’ve probably lost a little bit (of fitness), but I’m not too concerned about that,” he said.

“I’ve been cross-training and all that kind of thing, maintaining (fitness). I’ll probably put my hand up, but there’s a lot of decision making that goes into it, so we’ll see.”

VFL: CATS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

Guthrie played both of Geelong’s JLT Series matches against West Coast and Essendon, but he was slowed between the clash with the Bombers and the opening round meeting with Collingwood.

“It was kind of tightness that wouldn’t go away, and I’ve done a few calves before, so we were probably just a little bit more cautious than if it was someone who had no injury history,” he said.
The 26-year-old was given free rein as he spent the majority of the contest in the midfield.
However, Guthrie’s unsure where he’ll line up when he earns a recall to the AFL team.
“I played a lot of midfield today, and I probably trained the majority of pre-season in the midfield, so possibly there but who knows,” he said.
“A good player is a versatile player so I’ll try and fit in the best I can.”
VFL coach Shane O’Bree says Guthrie took some time to work his way into the contest.
“He was similar to most of our mids I thought, where he was just off the bit early with matching the intensity of the opposition,” O’Bree said.
“But when the game got on our terms, he looked a lot better and comfortable.
“I think Cam would agree that it was more just how he got through this game off a bit of a break and how he feels coming out of that.
“And just keep training his high standards to put himself up for (AFL) selection this week.”
