Fort’s “Twist in the Tale”

DARCY Fort says the suspension of the AFL season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic is just another “twist in the tale” of his football journey.

Given his AFL chance after years battling away at GFL, VFL and SANFL level, after three games in 2019, the Geelong big man worked hard over pre-season to beat out Rhys Stanley for the ruck role in the opening round loss to Greater Western Sydney.

The 26-year-old performed solidly with 23 hitouts, eight possessions and two kicks, and was disappointed not to be able to take that momentum into the following week’s clash with Gold Coast.

“It would have been good to go up against Gold Coast in Round 2 and try and redeem myself after losing to Gold Coast (in the pre-season),” Fort said.

“This is a pretty unfortunate situation, and we’ve just got to do everything we can to stay healthy and obey what the government’s putting out.

“As disappointing as it is, you’ve just got to move on and be thankful our families are safe and footballers are employed because there a lot of people in a bad way at the minute.”

The South Barwon product is open to playing in an isolation hub to get the season restarted but knows the suggestion of players spending up to 20 weeks in quarantine isn’t for everyone.

“If that’s what the AFL came out and said, I could probably live with that,” Fort said.

“But, I understand there’ll be a lot of guys that would struggle with it. I know my partner would struggle with it, and I would struggle being away from her.

“But, if that’s what it takes, then that’s what it’s got to be.”

Fort admits working on his ruck craft has been tough in isolation, but has been training with Tom Atkins and kicking the footy with his girlfriend.

“With the non-contact element, you do get a bit fresher,” he said.

“I’ve been trying to work on little parts of my game like grip strength; small things I can do at home.

“I’ve had a medicine ball I can throw around and catch while I’m sitting on the couch.”
