Duncan on-track for return

MITCH Duncan only needs to get through training across the weekend to guarantee his first Geelong appearance of 2021,

The classy midfielder has battled ongoing calf concerns since the start of pre-season, forcing him to watch the opening two rounds of the season from the sidelines.

However, coach Chris Scott plans for Duncan to take on Hawthorn in the traditional Easter Monday clash between the two clubs.

“He’s looking really good,” Scott said. “Our plan all along – and it’s been seamless for over the last tw0-and-a-half weeks – was to have him ready for Monday.

“Those plans can always change at the last minute, and we do have a bias towards conservatism with that sort of thing.

“But, so far, the plan’s been executed; (there’s) still a bit of time before Monday.

“I’d like to see a little bit more today and speak to him, but I’d expect him to play.”

Despite key forward Jeremy Cameron hoping to be right to take on the Hawks and make his Geelong debut, he’ll be held back until the Round 4 match-up with Melbourne.

With Gary Rohan missing through suspension, the Cats will have a different forward structure to anything they’d envisaged coming into the season.

“We have a couple of plans that we think could work, but we haven’t really nailed it yet,” Scott said. “We’ve just got to wait on selection a little bit.

“It’s a good question because if you asked four weeks ago, Cameron and Rohan are pretty integral to that look.

“And now they’re both unavailable, and Ratugolea’s unavailable.

Sam Menegola (AC joint) hasn’t been ruled out, while the uncapped Max Holmes is firming to make his debut after being an emergency last week and impressing in the VFL practice match against Port Melbourne.

If he does debut, Scott says he’s keen to make sure it’s not as the medical substitute.

“It’d influence me, personally, not to do it,” he said.

“But the thing that always trumps that is what’s best for the team.”
