JACKSON Thurlow has declared key defender Lachie Henderson as the man to beat in the six-man Geelong contingent in this afternoon’s Lorne Pier to Pub.

Thurlow, who will tackle the iconic race for the second time, says he won’t be entering the race with any specific tactics.

“I think I’ll just follow Hendo, I think Hendo’s the man to beat,” he said.

“But everyone wants to beat Joel (Selwood). I’ll try and follow Hendo and hopefully Joel’s behind us all.”

Also taking to the water from the Cats are Selwood’s brother Scott, George Horlin-Smith and Mark Blicavs, who will be hoping his appearance at last year’s Wacky Wednesday as 2016 Olympic gold medallist Mack Horton has an impact.

As well as swimming the Pier to Pub, Thurlow competed in the team event at the Noosa Triathlon during the off-season.

He says cross-training has been of benefit to his football.

“When you get off a bike and try and run 10kms, it’s bloody hard going,” Thurlow said.

“The (Pier to Pub) swim is another part that adds to it.

“I did a lot of swimming in (knee) rehab … it’s pretty light on the body and it’s another way to be competitive, especially with a few boys doing the Pier to Pub.”
