GEELONG has given the honour of wearing the no.18 jumper vacated by inaugural captain Mel Hickey to its second pick in the AFLW Draft

Laura Gardiner who the Cats selected at no.20 from the Geelong Falcons, was confirmed as wearing the number on Thursday night.

Fellow former Falcon Darcy Moloney, who Geelong picked first at no.10, has taken on the no.4 vacated by the delisting of Cassie Blakeway.

Olivia Barber (no.15), Stephanie Williams (25) and Carly Remmos (29) will look to become the first player to wear their respective numbers at AFLW level for the Cats.

Williams, who the Cats selected with pick No.27, is still getting her head around being on an AFL list.

“You still can’t believe it, and you pinch yourself some times,” she said.

“It definitely does make it a bit real (having a number).

Geelong will open its third AFLW campaign against North Melbourne on January 31.

Williams has half-an-eye on the date, but the Northern Territory product is using her time at the moment as a learning experience.

“My reflective partner is Renee Garing, she’s awesome,” Williams said. “She’s helped me with all the terminology for working in the forward (line).

“And Richelle Cranston’s been awesome, too, just letting me know some terminology and that kind of thing.

“All the girls get around you when you don’t know a drill and that kind of thing.

“It’s exciting, I guess. It’s good to learn and keep learning and asking questions.

“It’s an awesome team environment – everyone helps you.”

Meanwhile, the Cats are expected to announce their new captain before Christmas.

Meg McDonald, who was deputy to Mel Hickey in 2020, looms as the most likely leader.
