GMHBA Stadium will have a guaranteed capacity of more than 40,000 with the State Government upping its commitment for the Stage 5 redevelopment of the venue.

An extra $40m will be allocated for the upgrade in the upcoming Victorian budget, taking the total project total to $142m.

To be located at the northern end of the ground and with a capacity of 14,000, the two-tier stand will replace the Ford Stand and Gary Ablett Terrace.

Providing a new home for Geelong Cricket Club, it will also feature changerooms, an entry plaza, sports museum, and function room.

The Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, which is currently housed in cramped quarters in the Brownlow Stand, will move its administration to the new facility.

“We’re delighted with this investment from the Victorian Government which will deliver a world-class stadium
designed to serve its community,” Trust chair Stephen Gough said.

“Kardinia Park continues to enhance its recognition as Australia’s best regional stadium.”

Work will start on the Stage 5 redevelopment following the 2021 AFL season.

Once completed in early 2023, it will conclude the almost two-decade-long overhaul of GMHBA Stadium, which started with the construction of the Reg Hickey Stand in 2004.
