CARLTON has appointed Michael Voss as its new senior coach for the next three AFL seasons.

The former Brisbane Lions captain and coach had been working as Ken Hinkley’s senior assistant at Port Adelaide and beat a hot field for the Blues job.

Voss’ appointment came after former Hawthorn premiership mastermind Alastair Clarkson and ex-Fremantle and St Kilda grand-final coach Ross Lyon ruled themselves out of the running.

“After a thorough and considered selection process, Voss’s credentials and vast experience in football made him the right person for the job,” Carlton president Luke Sayers said.

“… With Michael, we are getting someone who knows exactly what it takes to achieve high performance – which is consistently winning games of football, to provide the opportunity to compete in September and ultimately win premierships.”

The 46-year-old Voss will be Carlton’s third senior coach in four seasons after David Teague was sacked last month, and he faces the task of getting the Blues to the finals for the first time since 2013.

An AFL great as a player, who won the Brownlow Medal in 1996 and captained Brisbane to a three-peat from 2001-2003, Voss coached the Lions 109 times (43 wins) between 2009 and 2013 when he was sacked.

“It is truly a great honour to join a club as big and as proud as Carlton, and I take on this role with a great sense of pride and excitement for what’s to come,” Voss said.

“From the outside looking in, I think everyone can see the undeniable talent on the playing list, which I’m really looking forward to getting to work with.

“To go with that, there’s a massive, loyal supporter base that has stood by this football club for a long time.

“We all now have the ability to embrace this reset stage and look forward together.”

Carlton previously sought out Voss at the end of 2007 to replace Denis Pagan but he opted not to interview for the role.

He interviewed after Brendon Bolton was axed in 2019 only for Teague to be appointed after a successful caretaker stint.
