Rookie draft provides lifelines

DISCARDED Western Bulldogs forward Stewart Crameri will play for his third AFL club after Geelong threw him a lifeline at Monday’s rookie draft.

The 29-year-old kicked 166 goals in 99 games in stints with Essendon and the Bulldogs but was cut by the Dogs after a wretched two-year period.

Crameri served a season-long doping ban from his time with the Bombers in 2016 then had his 2017 campaign limited to two AFL games due to a hip injury.

The Rookie Draft followed the Pre-season draft where just one player was selected.

The AFL initially advised there would be no Pre-season draft on Monday afternoon after all clubs indicated they would not take part.

But it went ahead after Carlton had a change of heart and selected former Port Adelaide defender Cam O’Shea.

That move meant that Jackson Edwards, the son of Adelaide champion Tyson Edwards, joined the Crows as a rookie under the father-son rule.

Edwards was available to be chosen by rival clubs after Adelaide decided to nominate him as a rookie under the rule, but the move paid off after he made it through the national and pre-season drafts.

The rookie draft was the last opportunity for clubs to add players to their 2018 squads.

Former North Melbourne veteran Lindsay Thomas (Port Adelaide), ex-Carlton forward Dylan Buckley (Greater Western Sydney) and discarded Gold Coast winger Matt Shaw (Carlton) were also among the delisted players to be given another chance at the elite level.

A host of players were re-drafted as rookies by the clubs that delisted them ahead of free agency and the national draft.

Sydney gave 2012 premiership defender Alex Johnson another chance to resurrect his career after four knee reconstructions.

Claye Beams (Brisbane), Cam Ellis-Yolmen (Adelaide), Sam Reid (GWS), Lewis Pierce (St Kilda), Roarke Smith (Western Bulldogs) and Adam Oxley (Collingwood) were also offered lifelines.

Players of note to miss out include Richmond’s Ben Lennon, Geelong’s Tom Ruggles, Sydney’s Michael Talia and Carlton’s Blaine Boekhorst.
