Pies too good for Eagles

WEST Coast has suffered another Victorian nightmare with lowly Collingwood smashing the Eagles by 45 points at the MCG.

As former captain Shannon Hurn became the first Eagles player to reach 300 games, West Coast produced another diabolical effort on the road to go down 14.6 (90) to 6.9 (45).

The seventh-placed Eagles, who still should sneak into the finals, were never in Saturday’s contest as the Magpies piled on the first eight goals.

Jamie Cripps slotted West Coast’s first major 21 minutes into the second quarter but it hardly got any better for the Eagles as Collingwood recorded their biggest victory since round one last year.

The margin blew out to 57 points during the third term but the Eagles kicked four last-quarter goals to save some face.

It was West Coast’s third embarrassing outing in Victoria this season after they lost to Geelong by 97 points in round six and to Sydney by 92 points at GMHBA Stadium earlier this month.

While the Cats and Swans are genuine finals teams, Collingwood (6-13) have endured a tumultuous season after parting ways with coach Nathan Buckley and are without injured captain Scott Pendlebury.

Acting captain Steele Sidebottom stepped up in Pendlebury’s absence, collecting 33 possessions and slotting a goal.

Fellow midfielders Taylor Adams and Jordan De Goey were also outstanding, dominating West Coast’s highly-rated on-ball brigade.

Collingwood had 12 different goal-kickers, with Jamie Elliott and Brody Mihocek leading the way with two each.

Defender Isaac Quaynor kicked his first career goal in his 34th AFL game and was mobbed by his teammates.

The result lifts the Magpies to 14th, creating a six-point gap between them and last-placed North Melbourne.

Collingwood will play their first match in Tasmania for premiership points when they face Hawthorn in Launceston next weekend, while West Coast are due to play premiership fancies Melbourne.
